I said I lost my footing and slipped, and altough I'm sure Miyako did not believe it, when our attention diverted to the pile once again, it was still! Surely whatever dark entity resided within it, had accepted my modest offering. Miyako asked me what happened, but I was too ashamed to admit that an imperial soldier could feel fear. I panicked and in my attempts to try and release myself from that deathly grip, I lost my balanced and tumbled down the pile, being just as shocked and confused when I hit the ground. Something was pulling me by the wrist, from inside the pile! I have no doubts it was something grabbing me, it couldn't have been my hand getting tangled in someone's garment or trapped under the weight of the bodies, for it was a steely grip, almost strong enough to crush my wrist! When I was closed to it's summit I reached for my grenade and burried it as deep as I could within the pile, but, before I could set it off, I felt something. Unsure what to do, I handed my rifle to Miyako, and climbed the pile. It was to no effect, the pile still sagged on. Miyako tapped me on the shoulder and said we should stab it with our blades, saying if it was someone alive under it, it was right that we deliver them a coup d'grace and put them out of their misery.
#Command the unliving full#
And yet the pile writhed, full of unlife. Surely it couldn't be anyone alive and trapped under the pile, as every beast and being had been dead for at least two days now. alive? It couldn't be! Not entirely sure as to what to do, I shouted over to Miyako, who promptly came to my aid and was just as shocked by what we were seeing! We tried to reason, perhaps it was a mangy dog or some other scavenger looking for dinner, or a looter, but we reasoned no dog would have the strenght needed to make the entire pile sag under its own weight, neither it could be a looter as these people had nothing of value. Sometime around midnight, I heard something thrasing about, and in fulfilling my duties of investigating such sound, I came upon the pile of deceased villagers we had made earlier, and somehow, the pile was moving! It writhed as if it was.

I expected it would be an uneventful night until I was relieved, but what I have witnessed still has me quite unsettled. No sooner had nightfall arrived, I have been assigned guard duty just outside the perimeter. Sergeant Goto petitioned Lieutenant Hanamori to allow us to burn the bodies, citing the risk of disease spreading among the ranks but the lieutenant denied it, citing it would be a waste of resources and the resulting bonfire might give away our position.Īs a result, the bodies were made into a big pile outside the perimeter, a few dozen meters away from what remains of the road that used to lead up to the village. Unfortunately we also have had to finish the corpse harvest started by the villagers, with the end result being four or five dozen bodies of men and animals. As night time draws near, we are setting camp in the ruins for the night before we continue our advance. Our commander ordered a small squad be dispatched to find them before they managed to report our movements to whatever enemy forces might be in the region. They had left in a hurry, as there were a few tools and carts abandoned and bodies strewn about, no doubt they must have seen us coming. We observed a few hours earlier some villagers gathering their dead from the flood, however when we returned a few hours later, they were nowhere to be seen.

Whatever the cause, Lieutenant Hanamori has ordered us to stop gossiping, as it is detrimental to morale.Īs per the commander's orders, we have scouted out positions ahead of the main force, and found little else other than a few ruins to the west. Some say the chinese flooded the river on purpose to halt our advance, others say it is a divine curse brought down on us by some old hag in a mud hut in the middle of nowhere, and a few mentioned it is direct intervention by the chinese god, Guan Yu.

So far, there is much hearsay going around the ranks. Our maps are more or less worthless, seeing as the raging waters have swept away many villages and landmarks, with many more still flooded or even beneath the waters. Command is scrambling to reinforce the area, in fear of an attack by kuomintang forces to the west while the chinese guerrilla forces harass our supply lines. So far, damages haven't been fully assessed, but it seems we have lost contact with a few positions along the Yellow River and towards the south of our present location. June 10th, 1938 - Nameless ruins - Jiangsu, ChinaĪ few days ago we received information that a damn burst along the yellow rivers and the water swept down it's course, taking men and beast in it's wake.
